What lean body mass tells you

Lean body mass is everything you’re made of that isn’t fat (muscle, bone, organs, and water), and it’s the number that actually matters when you’re losing weight. Scale weight tells you how much you weigh; lean mass tells you how much of that is the metabolically active tissue you want to keep.

For most people, lean mass is 60–90% of total body weight, and the rest is fat. The goal of a good weight-loss plan isn’t just to move the scale down, it’s to make sure the loss comes from the fat side of that split, not the lean side.

How this calculator estimates it

This tool uses the Boer formula, the same math behind most consumer lean-mass calculators. Two things about it are worth knowing before you lean on the number.

It was published in 1984 to normalise body fluid volumes, not to report body composition, and it was derived in 87 healthy people of normal body build (47 men aged 21 to 72, 40 women aged 19 to 68, mean relative weight 1.02). Applying it to someone carrying substantially more fat is an extrapolation beyond the group it came from.

And it was never validated for tracking lean-mass change in someone losing weight, which is the thing a GLP-1 user most wants from it. Re-running it after a 20 lb loss returns a different number because you put a different weight in, not because it measured anything about your muscle. For that question a DEXA scan is the instrument, and this is not a substitute for one.

It’s still an estimate, though. The Boer formula assumes an average body-fat distribution for your height and weight, so it can be off for very muscular or very lean individuals. The only way to measure your body composition is a scan, DEXA is the gold standard, and InBody or other bioimpedance devices are a cheaper, less precise option. Use this number as a smart starting point, not a lab result.

Why lean mass is the number to protect

Two people can lose the same 30 pounds and end up in completely different places. One loses mostly fat, keeps their muscle, and holds their metabolism steady. The other loses a big chunk of muscle along with the fat, drops their resting calorie burn, and finds the weight creeps back. Same scale result, opposite outcome.

Your lean mass is the biggest driver of your resting metabolic rate, roughly how many calories you burn just being alive. Protecting it during weight loss is what keeps your metabolism from sagging and makes the loss stick.

Turning your lean mass into a protein target

Here’s the practical payoff. A common, easy-to-remember target for protecting muscle during weight loss is about 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass per day. If this calculator estimates your lean mass at 130 lb, that’s a floor of roughly 130 grams of protein a day.

That approach is often more accurate than basing protein on total body weight, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose, it anchors the target to the tissue you’re trying to keep rather than the fat you’re trying to lose. Pair that protein floor with resistance training two to three times a week and you’ve got the two levers that decide whether your weight loss costs you muscle. On a GLP-1 specifically

GLP-1 medications drive fast, significant weight loss, and the faster you lose, the more attention lean mass needs. Trial analyses have shown that a meaningful share of the weight lost on these drugs can be lean tissue when protein and training aren’t prioritized. Knowing your lean mass gives you a concrete number to defend, which is far more motivating than a vague “eat more protein.” Re-check it every month or two as your weight changes to see whether your loss is staying on the fat side of the ledger.
